PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Department of Physical Therapy at Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU) embraces the Jesuit tradition of education excellence in the preparation of entry-level physical therapists for service to others, the betterment of society, and ethical leadership.
Wheeling Jesuit University physical therapy graduates are prepared to deliver physical therapy services to diverse populations throughout the continuum of prevention, wellness, and rehabilitation. They are generalists who are able to practice in a variety of settings, including those areas underserved by the health-care system.
The WJU physical therapy graduates demonstrate skills in problem-solving and life-long learning which prepares them for leadership within the health-care system.
The integration of cultural competence in physical therapy education has become a focal point in mainstream and unconventional entry level curricula. Parallel to this fundamental standard are issues centered on service learning. The two topics intersect providing students and faculty with experiences that are aimed at increasing awareness of and sensitivity for cultural diversity and the distinctive traits of the diverse cultures we encounter in our profession. Having successfully implemented a service learning component in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Problem Based Learning Curriculum, the Department of Physical Therapy at WJU is at the forefront and cutting edge of service learning in physical therapy education. Service learning at WJU is addressed at the local, regional, and international levels.
Service learning at the local level is integrated into the DPT curriculum. During the fall and spring semesters of the first academic year, under the supervision of a faculty member, students are assigned in groups to various local community partner sites to expose them to the community needs and systems that provide services to specific populations.
The regional service learning component takes place during the summer of the first academic year and focuses on public health in the Appalachian region. Students have the opportunity to spend two days at a retreat facility located in a rural county in the state of West Virginia.
The international service learning experience takes place in the final academic year with sites located in Central and South America. The focus of this aspect of service learning emphasizes the global aspects of health care and reflects on the student's role as a global citizen.
Wheeling Jesuit University's combination of a physical therapy professional education, problem based learning, and service learning provides the student with an excellent and unique experience in his or her quest to become an outstanding physical therapist.
