The Program currently has an enrollment agreement with the University of Toledo to reserve 12 spots for qualified applicants and with Bowling Green State University to reserve 10 spots for qualified applicants. Eligible applicants from institutions other than UT or BGSU will be considered for the remaining seats.  This enrollment agreement is being phased out such that applicants who apply in Fall 2012 will be the last group for which seats will be held.  Thereafter, preference will be given to UT applicants.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The fully accredited DPT program at the University of Toledo is a cost effective, 93 semester credit program that spans 34 months. Enrollment is full time and includes a total of 36 full time weeks of clinical education experiences. The DPT program is affiliated with The University of Toledo Medical Center, a comprehensive academic health science center that affords students a variety of learning experiences in the out-patient, acute care, and in-patient rehabilitation settings. In addition to access to the physical therapy clinics and their patients, PT students benefit greatly from other physical and intellectual resources afforded by an education in an academic health education institution. These include other clinicians and scientists engaged in health care research, as well as medical books, journals, and equipment. Learning to practice as a physical therapist requires learning the culture and professionalism of health care, which an academic health science center such as ours can offer.

The DPT program faculty is a unique collection of seasoned passionate educators who are accomplished clinicians and researchers. All faculty members have advanced academic degrees and are licensed physical therapists.  Several faculty are also University clinicians and are Board-Certified Clinical Specialists in their area of expertise. In addition to being exposed to such expertise, students also benefit from having physicians, anatomists, pathologists, and other University faculty regularly involved in their education.

The DPT program, in collaboration with the UT Department of Kinesiology, also offers a DPT/PhD track that enables students to simultaneously pursue clinical (DPT) and academic (PhD) doctoral degrees. The PhD is in Exercise Science with an emphasis on research. UT is one of only several programs in the country to offer such a collaboration, and the only program in the country in which DPT academic credit can contribute, in part, to the fulfillment of a PhD. After successful completion of Year-1, a qualified DPT student may apply for consideration into the combined DPT/PhD track.
