PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The entry-level Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) Program is designed to prepare graduates to perform evidence-based practice in the current exciting and challenging healthcare environment. The program begins in late June of each year and continues on a full-time basis for three years, including summers. The comprehensive curriculum delivered by a core of 15 faculty and distinguished clinical adjunct faculty ensures a strong foundation of the theory and practice of physical therapy.
The curriculum includes three case-based integrative units of study designed to develop clinical decision-making skills and prepare the student for clinical experience. Students complete 38 weeks of supervised clinical experience in four settings selected according to student interests from a wide variety of practice settings. The first clinical experience is an 8 week, full time hospital-based experience after the first year of didactic education. The second clinical experience is a 15 week part time experience linked to simultaneous coursework after the second year. Two full time 12 week experiences complete the student preparation for autonomous clinical practice. Upon graduation, the student is eligible to sit for licensure and is prepared to practice in a clinical setting.
Stony Brook University is known for excellence in education, a commitment to an active research environment, and one of the best teaching hospitals in the region. The newly developed Research and Development Park is home to the Rehabilitation Research and Movement Performance Lab (RRAMP), a one-of-a-kind, 7,000-square-foot laboratory dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities, assessing athletic performance and aiding recovery after disease or injury through the use of a state-of-the-art motion analysis system. As part of the School of Health Technology and Management, the DPT program strives to provide the highest quality education in a multidisciplinary learning environment that fosters research, scholarly activity, critical thinking, evidence based practice, leadership and professionalism while affirming the importance of ethical behavior, human diversity, service, and a team approach to healthcare.
Located 60 miles east of New York City, the campus enjoys a picturesque setting amid the historic village of Stony Brook, the beaches of Long Island Sound just minutes to the north and the Atlantic Ocean 45 minutes to the south, and the convenience of accessible public transportation to New York City makes Stony Brook one of the most desirable places to live on the East Coast
