Summary of Policies for Programs Participating in PTCAS

Below is a summary of program policies related to the submission of reference (letter) packets from college and university letter services to PTCAS. Carefully review the program pages and reference summary table for important information about reference requirements. PTCAS does not determine if you have sent the appropriate reference type or number for a particular program.

Letter Packets

Letter packets from a college or university letter service may include composite or committee reference letters (also known as letters of evaluation).

“Composite” letters typically represent a compilation of letters collected from various individuals.
“Committee” letters generally represent a single letter with the collective thoughts of a group of designated individuals usually written by the chair or a designee, such as a pre-health professions advisor.

Each program will decide whether (1) to accept a particular reference or letter packet based on local criteria and (2) count the letter packet as one or more references in the local admissions process, regardless of how it is processed by PTCAS. Program policies vary.
