PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The mission of the Indiana University Department of Physical Therapy is to

  • demonstrate scholastic excellence in teaching and learning;
  • discover and apply knowledge in research and creative activity; and
  • demonstrate compassionate service in civic engagement.

We are dedicated to preparing culturally competent autonomous Doctors of Physical Therapy who, by their commitment to advance the health and quality of life for all humanity, are recognized as leaders’ among health professionals and the community.

Our faculty believe that a strong academic background, a robust scientific curriculum, resources that cultivate learning, adaptation and skilled performance, and a physical, social and cultural environment that fosters student’s professional development are critical to each student’s success.

Our curriculum is grounded on evidenced-based research and encompasses strong basic, clinical and applied sciences that contribute to the unique body of knowledge in physical therapy for patient care which includes examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and plan of care and intervention.  We provide our students with state of the art clinical and basic science facilities which allow students to engage in ongoing departmental research that is focused on both teaching and health outcomes.

Our program is committed to provide outstanding clinical education experiences, both in-state and out-of state. This includes opportunities to engage in supervised patient care in real clinical practice settings starting in the first semester of the program, in addition to 4 full-time clinical internships.  This is a unique component of our program which will enable our students to apply the knowledge acquired in the classroom to clinical settings with real patients in real time.  An important component of our commitment to academics includes scholarship opportunities, a student mentoring program, faculty advising, and various volunteer activities in the community that allow our students to be successful in our program and as future practitioners.  Students are taught by an outstanding group of nationally and internationally recognized faculty known for their clinical, teaching and research expertise.

Our faculty members have been awarded numerous teaching and service awards which demonstrates our commitment to academics, in addition to securing millions of dollars in funding to support cutting-edge research.  As a faculty we are very proud of our students’ academic achievements and community involvement.

Our students have been recognized both locally and nationally for their academic achievements and commitment to research; the 2006 and 2010 Mary McMillan Awards went to IU DPT students - this is the most prestigious award given nationally to students.  In addition, IU DPT students have won the prestigious IN-APTA scholarship 5 of the last 6 years.
