PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Husson University is a private institution, located in Bangor Maine, with an approximate enrollment of 3,000.  The School of Physical Therapy is part of the College of Health and Education, and is housed in a newly constructed facility with dedicated and fully equipped teaching and research labs.  To learn more about Husson, go to www.husson.edu.

The mission of the School of Physical Therapy is to graduate skilled and knowledgeable physical therapists who are independent in their assessment of clients and collaborative within the health care team.  The entry-level physical therapy program is designed to provide high school and college graduates with a thorough, efficient, and affordable path to a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree.  Undergraduate students enroll in an accelerated six-year program leading to a B.S. in Kinesiology and an entry-level DPT degree.  Individuals who have a bachelor's degree and have met all the course prerequisites enter as graduate students into the three-year professional DPT program.  Each DPT class consists of a maximum of 40 students with approximately half of the students coming from Husson’s undergraduate program and the other half coming with BS degrees from other institutions.

The DPT program has eight highly-skilled full-time and two half-time faculty members offering a collegial and supportive learning environment for students’ academic and professional development.  Study consists of discipline-specific courses that prepare the student for clinical practice and licensure as a physical therapist.  Mandatory courses are scheduled for fall, January, spring, May and summer terms.  Unpaid fulltime clinical experiences are required in each of the three academic years:

  • Year 1—8-week placement generally mid-May to early July
  • Year 2—8-week placement from mid-October to mid-December
  • Year 2—8-week placement generally mid-July to early September
  • Year 3—8-week placement in January and February

Physical Therapy students may have only one week off at winter break, one week off at spring break, and approximately 8 weeks off during the summer.    Bangor is a safe, affordable community and has been ranked as one of the top 50 small cities in the USA.  Summer and winter activities can be enjoyed on numerous lakes, on the ocean, and in the nearby mountains of Acadia National Park.
