PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Physical Therapy Educational Program is an entry-level curriculum leading to a Doctoral degree in physical therapy (DPT). The DPT Program is available in Concord, New Hampshire and at the University's Goodyear, Arizona campus. Students seek admission following the receipt of an undergraduate degree and completion of prerequisite coursework.
The program is designed as an integrated model closely following the concepts of the Normative Model of Physical Therapist Education developed by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). This curriculum prepares the student to integrate the five elements of patient/client management-examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention in a manner to optimize outcomes.
As a dynamic curriculum, which is based on current knowledge of practice, students are constantly exposed to advances in the profession. A cornerstone of this curriculum is the concept of primary care as an evolving health care environment. Concepts that prepare students to function in this dynamic system cut across the curriculum and are reinforced in many courses. Students develop skills in professionalism, compassion, time management, team dynamics, critical thinking, documentation, using referral systems, service learning, interpersonal communication, effective written communication, and prevention of injuries, as well as promotion of health, wellness, and fitness. At the center of the curriculum are the missions of the University, the College, and the Program, and a focus on the patient as the source of information and the primary health decision-maker.
Physical therapy students and faculty at Franklin Pierce University appreciate the partnership between the patient and the health care provider and serve as advocates for the patient. Graduates of this program are practitioners who are kind and compassionate; integrate mind, body, and spirit; make continuing contributions to the community; demonstrate commitment to lifelong learning, and are respected as highly competent professionals.
