PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
In partnership with Alamance Regional Medical Center (ARMC), Elon’s Department of Physical Therapy Education enrolled its charter class for the Master of Physical Therapy Education program in January 1998. In January 2003, Elon enrolled its first Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) class. Elon’s DPT program seeks to produce graduates who will be highly skilled, clinical generalists. Graduates will exemplify compassion for individuals of every age, means and ethnicity, and will be well prepared for leadership, possessing professional integrity as they become part of the health care team. ARMC’s values mirror those of Elon University: excellence, compassion, efficiency, creativity, and leadership. The partnership with ARMC provides continuing professional growth for the physical therapy faculty and offers clinical and research opportunities for students.
The DPT program is a year-round, 36-month curriculum that begins each January. These December graduates enter the job market at a different time than most schools. Elon will continue the unique modular curriculum that is designed to integrate and coordinate courses and modules in a sequence that enhances learning.
The Elon faculty took the opportunity to evaluate the needs of the future graduate as they designed the transition from MPT to DPT education. Incorporated into the DPT curriculum are many new courses and unique learning experiences. Curricular changes were based upon feedback from leaders in the physical therapy profession about what the ideal preparation would be for the physical therapist of the future. The program will also provide opportunities for the DPT student to gain skills in conversational Spanish. Clinical education experiences will be available on a national basis. The final 24-week Internship will be a unique educational model to prepare the graduate to “hit the ground running.”
Elon has taken pride in developing an outstanding educational program from the inception. In order to keep pace with the increasing demand for physical therapists, the DPT program will expand the scope of its offerings. Beginning January 2012, classes will move to the new Gerald L. Francis Center, a 31,000-square-foot facility. As part of the program’s continued dedication to a low student-faculty ratio a new faculty member will be employed as the cohort grows from 36 to 44. The tradition of excellence continues today in the DPT program.
