PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The professional DPT program at Des Moines University begins in August of each year and runs for 34 consecutive months. The curriculum is composed of eight blocks of study ranging in length from 8-22 weeks, including an innovative 2-week health promotion and prevention practicum in year one. Clinical internships are integrated throughout the curriculum to correlate closely with classroom instruction. With this, students are able to apply their knowledge in a clinical setting as they learn the content. The program includes a strong emphasis on manual treatment and a patient-centered focus where treatment goals are related to functional improvements. Evidence-based practice models, clinical cases, laboratory practice in the classroom and clinic, and current technology are incorporated throughout the curriculum to enhance learning. Through this integrated approach, students learn to appreciate lifelong learning and the value of service as the basis for a career in physical therapy.
The program is taught by 11.5 full-time faculty members plus on-campus basic science and clinical faculty and numerous off-campus adjunct faculty from various health professions. The faculty to student ratio is 1:13.
Founded in 1898, Des Moines University comprises three colleges offering nine graduate degrees in medicine and the health sciences. The Physical Therapy program was established in 1988 within the College of Health Sciences.
In addition to the DPT degree, the College of Health Science offers programs in health care administration, public health, and physician assistant studies. The University also offers degree programs in osteopathic medicine, podiatric medicine, anatomy and biomedical sciences. Total university enrollment is more than 1,800 students.
