PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Physical Therapy Department at the University of Delaware (UD) is involved in several exciting educational programs, including our outstanding DPT program, a highly successful Interdisciplinary PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Sciences, and clinical fellowship programs for practicing clinicians in sports, orthopedic, geriatric, and neurologic physical therapy. In addition the Department runs two full-service Physical Therapy Clinics specifically designed to provide outstanding, on-site, integrated clinical experiences for our students.

The DPT program begins in late June/early July and continues for 2.5 calendar years (including summer and winter sessions). UD has a total student enrollment of over 20,000, which includes approximately 5,000 graduate students. The DPT program currently enrolls approximately 36 students per class.

All students in the DPT program live off campus, within a very short distance from campus. The UD campus is located in Newark, which is approximately 40 miles south of Philadelphia and 60 miles north of Baltimore. There are many cultural and entertainment activities conducted at or near the University.

Students participate in 4 full-time clinical experiences and 3 part-time integrated clinical experiences during the program. The first full-time experience is 6 weeks long and is held during the summer session following the 1st year of study. The 2nd, also 6 weeks long, occurs in the summer following the 2nd year of study. The final set of full-time clinical experiences is 16 weeks long, occurs during the final semester of the program and consists of 2 different rotations. UD maintains contracts with over 400 facilities around the country to provide these full-time clinical experiences. During the 4 full-time experiences, students are required to complete one experience in an acute care hospital, one in a rehabilitation environment, one in an outpatient setting and one experience is a practice setting of their choice. In addition to the above full-time experiences, each student participates in 3 semester-long, part-time integrated clinical experiences (sports and orthopedic, pediatrics, and geriatric and neurology).

96% of matriculated students graduate from the program (10-year average). All students that have graduated from our program have passed the licensing examination.

There are 18 full-time and 12 part-time faculty members. All nine of the tenure-track full-time faculty members hold post-professional doctoral degrees. Seven full-time faculty members are certified as clinical specialists, three of which are certified in two specialties. Over the past 3 years, the faculty has averaged over 40 research publications per year in peer-reviewed journals. The faculty currently brings in over $5.2 million in external research grant funding to the department per year. Most of this funding is from the NIH. The faculty to student ratio is 1:4.7.
